The first is EA Sports, as one of the world's largest publishers will launch the EA Sports Arena within PlayStation Home. It is scheduled to arrive this spring and will boast leaderboards, new multiplayer games, fresh trailers and previews, and all new content for your favorite EA Sports titles. The second is MTV, who will make a big splash in the PSN's video delivery service "with plans to bring content from a diverse collection of programming including MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Spike and more." The initial lineup will include the likes of "The City," "South Park," "Spongebob Squarepants," and VH1's "Rock of Love Bus" with Bret Michaels. As of now, the video delivery service already holds "nearly 1,200 movies and more than 3,000 TV episodes," many of which available in brilliant high-definition. Said SCEA's Senior Vice-President of Marketing and PlayStation Network, Peter Dille:

We're thrilled to add content from MTV Networks to our line up, it's a perfect fit for the PlayStation demographic, one of the most coveted audiences in entertainment today. Combined with the superior technology of the PS3 and PSP, the PlayStation Networks video delivery service truly provides consumers the best and most comprehensive content on demand from an incredible line up of entertainment brands to enjoy at home or on-the-go."

Yes, between all these new additions to Home and the PSN, the Network is rapidly becoming a major selling point for the PlayStation 3, and unless we overestimate what each offers, we dare say the PSN is more robust and diverse than Xbox Live at this point. At the very least, they're darn close, and the PSN remains free...

LBP Hits 1.3 Million Sold Worldwide

Okay, so maybe it's not the massive sales blockbuster Sony had hoped for, but perhaps it's just a slow starter. And besides, the latest numbers really aren't too shabby at all.

Kaz Hirai had a number of interesting stats to toss around at CES 2009 yesterday, and that includes the announcement of 85% OF ps3 owner being online. Well, here's another one: in a LittleBigPlanet update, Hirai says they've sold about 1.3 million copies worldwide, although we can't be 100% certain of the sales numbers in each region. It's still pretty impressive, and Hirai added that users have created over 300,000 new levels...which equates to over two total years of play time. Are there some LBP addicts out there, or is everyone really diving into the player-oriented construction aspects of the game? Well, whatever the reason, we have to call Media Molecule's little platformer that could a legitimate success, even if it never approaches the astronomical sales totals of games like GTAIV and MGS4. And we're very happy to see more gamers out there reward the developers for such a wonderfully accomplished title; it's not every day that you get something like this. And besides, for all you out there who always whine about "no originality" in this generation, well...pay attention!

And remember, because LBP is essentially whatever you want it to be, and it appears as if Sony might actually keep promoting it, this is one game that might never "top out" in terms of sales. Sales will slow down, of course, but it'll be interesting to see how far it can go...

NEWS

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

LATEST UPDATES

The Need for Speed

The Need for Speed (occasionally referred to in full as Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed) is a 1994 racing video game, developed by Electronic Arts Canada and published by Electronic Arts. It is the first in the Need for Speed series, which would span more than 15 titles to date. The premise of the game involves racing in sport cars, including several exotic models and Japanese imports. The game noted for its attempts in realism, and audio and video commentaries. Electronic Arts teamed up with automotive magazine Road & Track to match vehicle behaviour, including the mimicking of the sounds made by the vehicles' gear control levers. The game also contained precise vehicle data with spoken commentary, several "magazine style" images of each car interior and exterior and even short video-clips highlighting the vehicles set to music.
____________________________________________________________
Tracks:
The Need for Speed features seven tracks (the original 3DO version only features the 3 point to point courses), which consists of varied locations suggestively located in the United States. They include four close circuit tracks (with one as a bonus track), and three point-to-point tracks (each divided into three segments). Point-to-point tracks are the only tracks in the game that allow the flow of open traffic and police, but is only featured during one-on-one races. The tracks as outlined below:

 Point-to-point tracks

City: Set on largely straight, highway-like roadways stretching across an urban setting.

Coastal: Set along resort beaches, seaside cliffs and natural seafront terrain. The finish line of the track features a half-buried Statue of Liberty on the beach, reminiscent of that featured in the Planet of the Apes film.

Alpine: Consists of a short drive along farmlands, and long, windy roads along alpine forests. The last half of the entire track is covered in snow.

 Closed tracks

Rusty Springs Raceway: An old, oval-shaped, and short race circuit set in the desert.

Autumn Valley Speedway: A modern race circuit with numerous steeply banked corners, set among autumn-color trees.

Vertigo Ridge: Highland roadway with passages through forests and mountain ridges.

Lost Vegas (bonus track): A Las Vegas-like circuit, and the only track in the game to be set at night.

The Special Edition of the game includes an additional two closed tracks:

Burnt Sienna: Set in an American Old West ghost town located in barren land, with a segment of the track running below a mine and cave.

Transtropolis: Set in a heavily urbanized and industrialized setting, running across various industrial establishments, a multistory car park and an airport.

Need for Speed II

Need for Speed II is a 1997 racing video game, developed by Electronic Arts Canada and published by

Electronic Arts. It is a part of the Need for Speed series and sequel to The Need for Speed (1994), significantly deviating from the emphasis of realism in The Need for Speed to arcade-like gameplay, though it introduces the car tuning. As is its predecessor, Need for Speed II features several exotic cars, and includes tracks set in various parts of the world. The game also opted to remove police pursuits introduced in The Need for Speed.
______________________________________________________________
Gameplay:
Changes have been made in regard to the racing modes offered. With the exception of the absence of point-to-point races, the player is still allowed to race in with either a single opponent or a full grid of six (for two players modes) or seven opponents around a track two, four or eight time. Standard single player races and tournaments (which allow the player to unlock bonus cars and tracks) are retained, and traffic can be toggled on or off in one-on-one races. Police chases, which were introduced in the first Need for Speed, are notably absent throughout the game. The player is also allowed to view a track drive along it backwards, as opposed to its predecessor, which only allows the player to drive and view a track in one direction.
Two new modes were introduced in the game. The two-player split-screen mode allows two players to race using the same computer, while the "lap knockout" mode pits a number of racers relative to the number of laps in a race (i.e. four racers for four laps; eight racers for eight laps) where the last opponent to complete each lap is eliminated until the last racer remains and wins. The game also supports network play through a serial port, modem or IPX network.
It should be noted that Need for Speed II is the first PlayStation game to take advantage of not only the NeGcon controller, but both the Dual Analog and the DualShock controllers as well.

Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit

Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit (also known as Over Drivin' III: Hot Pursuit in Japan) is a 1998 racing video game, developed by Electronic Arts Canada and published by Electronic Arts. It is the third major title in the Need for Speed series, significantly returning police pursuits as a major part of gameplay. Hot Pursuit remains focused in racing using exotic sports cars, but features races that primarily take place in locations within North America, including varied settings and climates. In addition, police AI is significantly improved over its predecessor, utilizing several tactics to stop both the player and opponent.
The game title's suffix, "hot pursuit," is a term for a police pursuit.
______________________________________________________________
Gameplay:
With police pursuits reintegrated into the game, Hot Pursuit's gameplay now consists of two categories. The first encompasses standard racing, as it has been in its predecessors, The Need for Speed and Need for Speed II, in which the player is allowed to race against one (including split-screen races) or seven other racers in normal circuit racers, knockouts, or tournaments (which allow the player to unlock bonus vehicles and a bonus track). The second category is dubbed the "Hot Pursuit," where police pursuits are included in races; the mode allows the player to select a standard sports car to race against a single opponent in a police-scattered track, or select a police variation of a sports car to pursue and stop all six racers before they complete their race. Completing both Hot Pursuit challenges in every track of the game unlocks additional police sports cars.

Need for Speed: High Stakes

Need for Speed: High Stakes (also known as Need For Speed: Road Challenge in Europe and Over Drivin' IV in Japan) is a 1999 racing video game, developed by Electronic Arts Canada and published by Electronic Arts. It is part of the Need for Speed series, once again featuring a host of exotic sport cars and tracks located in Western Europe and North America.
______________________________________________________________
Gameplay:
As in its predecessor, Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit, High Stakes retains standard races and police pursuits in game, as well as introducing a new form of tournament (High Stakes), and two pursuit modes (Getaway and Time Trap). It is also the last game in the Need for Speed series to feature a split-screen two player mode, in which two players can play simultaneously on the same computer.

 Career Mode
Career Mode has a chronological set of tournaments that challenges the player to complete a set of 8-car races for trophies to unlock bonus cars and tracks, incorporating a monetary reward system that allows a player to purchase vehicles, performance upgrades as well as repairs while earning cash by racing. In addition, each cup tournament requires that the player compete against one opponent in a "High Stakes" race. There are more tournaments on the PC version, and they are different from the console one - for example the PS vesion separates the Career into two separate Tournament and Special Event modes, with second being optional.

 High Stakes Mode
High Stakes race is a challenge, wherein the winner of the race will obtain the loser's car, while the loser obviously loses his/her car. On Play Station it is a separate 2-Player mode, which required 2 memory cards inserted and deleted the loser's car immediately after the race to prevent re-loading.

 Hot Pursuit Mode

Hot Pursuit mode, which was first introduced in the first game, remains in High Stakes. There are three modes in total, two of which were new to the series.
Classic Classic mode is essentially similar to Need For Speed 3's Pursuit mode, that allows the player to race ag

A police pursuit in High Stakes.

CTR:Crash Team Racing

Collecting ten wumpa fruit improves any item used. The game has a special "power slide" move that gives the player a speed boost while turning. It should be noted that in the last Jak and Daxter game from Naughty Dog: Jak X: Combat Racing also has a "power slide" which gives you an extra speedboost.
In the races, boxes contain weapons or other powerups that give the player an advantage. Green and black arrows on the ground (turbo boosters) will give the player a short speed increase. Most of the courses contain obstacles that cause a loss of speed, and must be avoided.
As in Mario Kart, CTR has a battle mode, in which players attack each other in one of several special battle arenas, some of which are unlockable.
Collectible items include trophies, crystals, gems, and relics. A number of secret characters can be activated throughout the course of the game.
______________________________________________________________
Story:
Crash and his friends are preparing to enter a kart racing tournament. Unfortunately, an extraterrestrial named Nitros Oxide sees this, and travels to Earth to compete. He claims to be the fastest racer in the Galaxy, who travels the stars looking for creatures to test his skill. He then challenges Earth to a "little game" he calls "Survival of the Fastest", and explains the rules: Oxide races against the best racer on Earth. If Earth's driver wins, Oxide will leave Earth alone. But if Oxide wins, he'll turn the entire globe into a concrete parking lot, and make Earth's inhabitants his slaves. The drivers of Earth prepare to race for the fate of their planet.

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

Gameplay:
Crash Bandicoot 2's gameplay is largely similar to that of the original. Players make their way through a limited environment whilst breaking crates, each of which containing some kind of bonus. Breaking all of a level's crates earns the player that level's clear gem. The player can collect additional clear and colored gems by finding and touching them. If a player collects all of the gems in the game, the secret ending is activated.
Crash has several moves: jump, spin attack, body slam, slide, duck, crawl, and an extra-high jump performed by sliding or ducking and then jumping. Previously, sliding and body slamming (which both include the O button) were not possible in the original, because both square and O activated the spin attack. Stepping on a question-mark platform/trap door takes Crash to a bonus level. Going to special locations, where something is somehow out of place, brings Crash to one of five secret levels.
If the player manages to reach a certain point in some levels without losing a single life, the player can hop onto a platform with a Skull and Crossbones logo on it. This takes Crash to another path in the level of the main path and contains boxes and other secrets one might notice not being found on the main path. Several levels with this have a special gem other than the one for breaking all the crates in a level.

Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped

Gameplay:
Like previous installments in the Crash Bandicoot series, Warped consists of two main modes of gameplay: a

hub room (since Crash 2) and the levels (since Crash 1). The hub room (called the Time Twister here) is split into five areas, each containing five levels and a boss fight. Initially, only one area in the hub is accessible, but more are opened as the areas are completed. The levels featuring Crash largely follow the "follow-the-path" gameplay seen in previous games in the series, but other modes, such as riding a biplane, jetski, and tiger among others, can be seen along with this. Another new feature is the ability to gain new abilities by defeating a boss. These abilities include faster running speed, a longer spinning attack, and a bazooka among others. The game also makes heavy use of the then-new Dual Shock controller by using the vibration effect frequ

ently.
There is a total of 30 levels in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, excluding bosses and the two levels which have two different entrances. A secret level, called "Hot Coco", contains one Relic and one Gem, and can only be accessed through the level "Road Crash" by crashing into a road sign with what appears to be an image of an alien on it. Another one, called "Eggipus Rex", also contains one Relic and one Gem, and is accessed through the level "Dino Might!", by getting caught by the second pterodactyl in the secret path the red gem platform takes Crash to. Neither of these are required for 100% completion, and by obtaining the gems and relics in each, up to 104% can be achieved. Upon receiving these as well as getting all gold or platinum relics, an extra gem can be received from Coco in the Time Twister, totalling 105%.
Each level contains a Crystal, a Relic, and either one or two Gems, excluding boss levels. The secret levels do not contain any Crystals. It is essential to collect all 25 Crystals throughout the game to win. Crystals are usually found near the end of each level, and are hard to bypass. Relics are received for successfully completing time trials (see below). There are 30 Relics throughout the game. Clear Gems are received by breaking every box in each level. Additionally, some levels contain Colored Gems, which are received when a level's secret area is completed. A handful of levels contain Gems which are earned by completing a task, such as winning a race. Gems are not beneficial, but are required to achieve 100% completion of the game. There is a total of 45 gems in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped.

Driver: You Are the Wheelman

In the game, the player is Officer Tanner, a cop gone undercover due to his impressive driving skills, and must gain the confidence of the syndicate's bosses by performing increasingly difficult missions such as stopping or following another car, driving through windows, delivering a stolen car or a fan-favorite, scaring a taxi customer. The game is played in four cities—(Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City)—which, like many games, remain only partially faithful to the original city layouts.
The game was designed to look like '60s and '70s car chase movies. The music, the character design in the cut scenes, the cars (with flying hubcaps), everything is inspired from movies such as Bullitt and even TV shows such as Starsky and Hutch. The game also features a Director's Mode where the run could be replayed with cameras chosen by the player, and a Quick Replay, where the cameras were automatically selected.
In addition to the Undercover mode, the player also had an option to drive around in the cities (once they were unlocked) and dirt tracks. There were several other modes, like pursuit, escape, checkpoint, and carnage (inflicting as much damage as possible). After the game was finished (or secret passwords inserted in the records screens), several cheats were available. Among them are: skipping the garage mission, give (among others) the car super speed, immunity to police cars, invincibility, or a short ride on Newcastle, Reflections' home town. However some editions of the game do not show this.
Initially only for the PlayStation, PC and Mac ports were released. A special Game Boy Color version was released, with top-down view, only three cities—San Francisco was removed—and fewer missions.

Driver 2

Gameplay:
Driver 2 expands on Driver's 3-D, free-roam structure, as well as adding the ability of the character, Officer Tanner, to step out of his car to explore on foot and carjack other people. The story missions are played separately from the take-a-ride mode where the player can explore the cities on their own time.
Missions in the game are generally vehicle-oriented, and involve trailing witnesses, ramming cars and escaping from gangsters/cops. A cutscene is shown prior to each mission to help advance the storyline, and thus the game plays rather like a Hollywood-style car chase movie. Although Tanner can leave his car and interact with certain elements of the environment, all violence takes place during pre-rendered scenes.
While the original PlayStation version offered a two-player split screen play, the Game Boy Advance version introduced a four player link option.

Grand theft auto

Gameplay:
Grand Theft Auto is made up of a series of levels each set in one of the three cities in the game. In each level, the player has a target number of points to achieve, and five lives to attain the score. The player is free to do whatever he wants. The player can gain points by causing death and destruction amid the traffic in the city, or steal and sell cars for profit, although to get to the large target money amount to complete a level, players will usually opt to complete some missions. Even during missions there is still some freedom as most of the time the player is free to choose the route to take, but the destination is usually fixed. It is this level of freedom which set GTA apart from other action based computer games at the time.

50 Cent: Bulletproof

Patay: Bulletproof is a video game which is currently available on the PlayStation 2 and Xbox platforms. The game was reworked into a PlayStation Portable50 Cent: Bulletproof G Unit Edition, with a top-down perspective. The titular protagonist is hip hop musician artist 50 Cent playing himself. The story revolves around Jackson's search for vengeance, hunting down the hitmen that attempted to murder him. The game also features Tony Yayo, Lloyd Banks, and Young Buck, members of the G-Unit rap crew, as 50's gang. Dr. Drearms dealer, and Eminem plays a corrupt police officer. There is also a video game soundtrack available, released by DJ Red Fury's Shadyville Entertainment. It also won "Best Original Song" in the 2005 Spike TV Video Game Awards version and titled plays an

Army Men: RTS

Gameplay:
Army Men: RTS's gameplay requires the acquisition and control of two resources; plastic and electricity, which are necessary to construct combat units and buildings. Plastic, which is required for all normal units, is taken from everyday objects, including Frisbees, dog bowls, and toys. Additionally, whenever a unit or structure is destroyed, a chunk of plastic worth a fraction of its initial cost appears where it was destroyed. Plastic is 'harvested' by Dump Trucks. Electricity, which is required for vehicles and Radio operator stuff, is drawn from electrical objects, such as batteries, toasters, and walkie-talkies. A particular structure, the Resource Depot, must be built to collect the resources gathered by the Dump Trucks.
Players use their resources to construct buildings and units. Since both factions have access to the same buildings and units neither side has an innate advantage over the other. Some buildings construct new units while others provide defense for a base. The production buildings can be upgraded to produce better units. Units are either infantry or vehicles. Infantry troops are cheap to produce but are not as tough, while vehicles tend to be costly. Vehicles range from passive (dump trucks and base-building bulldozers) to aggressive (tanks and half-tracks) to defensive (mine layers) to suicidal (Dum-dums, robots armed with firecrackers). Aside from grunts and grenadiers, infantry units have a special task; minesweepers clear out traps, snipers are potent anti-infantry units, and mortar men can annihilate buildings from afar.
Due to the nature of each unit, players must be able to counter whatever they are facing. A group of snipers could wipe out a force of grunts with ease, but the same group of snipers would be helpless against a half-track. Countering the half-track with a tank would leave a weakness to choppers. Players must balance both the relative strengths and weaknesses of their forces and their opponent's forces with the cost of producing the units.
Level balance can be changed by other factors. Power-ups, which can improve the speed, health, or damage of whichever side finds them first, cause a disparity between the sides. Heroes, powerful versions of the regular infantry, can cause great damage before being destroyed. Insects, chiefly ants, act as free units for whichever side is allied with them. The secondary objectives of single player missions often deal with one of these things.

Bully

Gameplay:
The gameplay is similar to the Grand Theft Auto series. It consists of a series of storyline driven missions required to complete the game, and a series of optional side missions. The main storyline is linear but the gameplay not as much, with the main character, Jimmy, having the option to roam over the school campus and town, completing missions whenever he feels like it. The game makes extensive use of minigames. Some are used to earn money, others to improve Jimmy's abilities.
School classes themselves are done in the form of minigames, broken into five levels of increasing difficulty. English, for example, is a word scramble minigame, and as Jimmy completes the level, he learns to apologize to bullies, deliver better taunts, apologize to prefects and finally to apologize to the police.
Similar to the Grand Theft Auto series, Jimmy has a multitude of weapons available, although they tend to run along the lines of things a school boy might actually attain, such as slingshots, bags of marbles, stink bombs, and later in the game a bottle rocket launcher and a spud gun. He also has an assortment of vehicles to drive - mainly bicycles with different abilities, but also a moped, a go-kart and a skateboard.

Call of Duty: Finest Hour

Call of Duty: Finest Hour is a first-person shooter for the Xbox, PlayStation 2 and GameCube video game

consoles. This video game simulates the infantry and combined arms warfare of World War II. It is published by Activision and developed by Spark Unlimited. Although it is based on the original Call of Duty for the PC, it has a completely different storyline. In the spirit of previous Call of Duty games, it features six different perspectives with stories and battles based on real world events from soldiers on each side of the allied campaign (US, British, and Soviet). Call of Duty: Finest Hour was released on November 16, 2004 in North America. It was followed up by a sequel, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, in 2005.
The game's music was composed by Michael Giacchino who previously worked on the original Call of Duty and the Medal of Honor franchise. AC/DC singer Brian Johnson provides the voice of the British commander.
